Is the original artwork for sale?
The original artwork featured in our publications is not currently for sale, though archival prints of certain paintings are available. These are printed in open editions on 308 gsm Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper (acid-free 100% cotton) using 11 individual inks with an archival life of 80+ years. They make a beautiful addition to any home, office, or classroom environment. Here's some guidance on framing.
Any advice on framing prints?
Our prints come in three standard sizes — 8×10", 12×15", and 16×20" — making it easy to find pre-existing frames to match (such as these). We recommend adding an off-white matte to set off the artwork. You could also explore magnetic wooden poster clamps (such as these or these) — though clamps are only appropriate for prints to be hung in low-traffic locations, as they don't provide the protection of glass or acrylic.
How do you make the artwork?
Most of the paintings in our publications are made using Liquitex acrylic inks on Arches hot press watercolor paper, with Kuretake Zig "Super Black" Ink used for the line work. The acrylic inks are applied using Princeton "Aqua Elite" sable hair watercolor brushes, and the black ink is applied using a Tachikawa "T40" dip pen holder with a few different nibs: Nikko G, Speedball B6, and Kuretake School-Pen. Blackwing pencils and Sakura "Pigma Micron" pens are also used.
What are some of your inspirations?
Our work with Sunlight Papers is inspired by the rich tradition of illuminated manuscripts that stretches back to early masterpieces like The Book of Kells and the books of William Blake, to more contemporary works by artists like Nicholas Roerich, Ul De Rico, Trina Schart Hyman, Peter Cross, Maurice Sendak, Shel Silverstein, Dr. Seuss, and Peter Sís, to creative collectives like Studio Ghibli, Pixar, and Bread & Puppet Press.
How can I follow your work?
We share reflections on the art of life every other Sunday through our Substack newsletter, where we also announce our new publications. We also post news and updates from the studio on Instagram.
