The Knowing What's Real Work
With Italian art collector Carlo Pepi
✹
Carlo Pepi never married. He used his savings to collect over 20,000 paintings and drawings, which he stored in two villas in the small town of Crespina, in the hills near Pisa. Pepi was a worldwide expert on the art of Amedeo Modigliani, and was renowned for his uncanny ability to identify forgeries. When asked how he tells the difference between the reals and the fakes, Pepi replied: It is very simple — the fakes do not vibrate.
